After shooting the skies outside of Santa Fe and informing Adam about the different types of clouds we saw that evening, he mentioned that I should post images of epic clouds I’ve seen over the years.
July 15, 2017. Palmer Park has an awesome overlook from which you can see a good chunk of the city, Garden of the Gods, and Pikes Peak in the distance. Because the sun was setting more north, there was a slight clearing that allowed the sun to hit the bottom of the clouds above the foothills while the rest of the skies were full of blue storm clouds. July 25, 2019. Adam took me on a day photography trip to places I hadn't been to around Colorado Springs. As we finished our loop, we stopped at Anderson Overlook off I-25 so we could watch this ridiculous storm cloud build over Pikes Peak. June 29, 2018. It looks like the foothills are on fire, no? I actually missed the best part of this sunset - the entire sky was this same neon pink and orange. However, I was able to catch the tail end of the sunset from, again, Palmer Park’s overlook. There was smoke in the sky from a wildfire nearby, hence the bright colors mixed with the storm clouds. August 2, 2020. I wanted to shoot the moonrise to the east of Colorado Springs but instead photographed these storm clouds at sunset after they drenched the city.
May 30, 2023. I hiked Green Mountain Trail outside of Boulder, Colorado. It was kind of wild to watch the storm clouds build over the Front Range to the north. I hightailed it out of there once I heard thunder but was lucky to avoid the storms, minus a few sprinkles. September 1, 2023. There wasn’t a colorful sunset this evening at Eleven Mile Reservoir, but the clouds did some nice “peeks” of the Sawatch Range peaks in the distance. June 4, 2023. While driving to Breckenridge along Highway 24, I opened the passenger window to shoot this massive thunderhead. August 12, 2022. Once again, I took this picture out the passenger window on the way to Breckenridge. This shot was closer to Fairplay off of Highway 9. Afternoon thunderstorms grow in the mountains and later wreak havoc along the plains.
June 20, 2021. Once the family was vaccinated for COVID, Adam and I made a rare summer trip home to see the family. After the thunderstorm blew through town, I went into the backyard to shoot the clouds and crops with my wide-angle lens. October 20, 2021. Adam and I went back to Iowa over fall break. My mom also loves a good photography adventure, so we spent the day driving all over eastern Iowa to take pictures. We were up at sunrise to get an early start and were treated to THE most colorful sunrise I remember seeing at my home. Share
March 15, 2020. Even now, when I look at this sunset series in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I get an eerie feeling. We took this trip right as COVID officially became a “thing,” so it felt like our last vacation for a while. This trip was the first clue we weren't going back to school after spring break. It was a fantastic sunset though. October 15, 2022. On a van trip to Carlsbad Caverns, we came across another national park we hadn't heard of, Guadalupe Mountains. We made a quick pit stop in the pouring rain and were treated to stormy skies and a rainbow once we left the van. October 15, 2022. The storms continued to swirl all afternoon. When we reached Sunset Campground in New Mexico, we opened the back of the van, and I watched the storms in the distance. There was so much lightning, but I couldn’t catch the strikes without a tripod. I love a good cloud photo if you couldn’t tell.
Cheers.
